PROGRESS FOR THE PEOPLE OF PARK VIEW

CRIME: Results, Reforms, and Reinvestments That Keep Us Safe

To make our community safer, we need to better fund police while demanding data-driven decisions, commonsense reforms, and strategic reinvestments that prioritize results. By improving transparency, reallocating resources, and funding prevention programs like mental health services and youth initiatives, we can build a safer, stronger community for all of us.

COMMUNICATIONS: Keeping You Informed and Connected

As you ANC, I’m deploying regular updates via social media, newsletters, and monthly community meetings to keep you informed about news, debates, projects, and decisions that may affect you and your family. My top priority is to keep you informed and to respond to you quickly - hopefully with answers that are helpful. The way we improve our city and our city government is to ensure every resident’s voice is heard and to hold our leaders accountable to the will of those they represent.

CODE: Enforcing Standards and Supporting Balanced Growth

Stricter code enforcement is not punitive - it’s essential to ensure a strong quality of life for all who call Park View home. It helps address unsafe structures, blighted properties, and public nuisances like illegal dumping. As we look to the future, I’m a firm advocate of balanced, thoughtful zoning decisions that promote affordable housing, protect green spaces, and preserve Park View’s character while respecting the needs of current residents.

“We can create a safer, stronger Park View by focusing on what works, staying conneåcted, and growing in a way that respects and preserves our community.”

— Commissioner Brad Howard, ANC

A COMMONSENSE APPROACH

THAT MOVES US

FORWARD

MY ANC PRIORITIES:

  • RESULTS, REFORMS & REINVESTMENTS THAT KEEP US SAFE

RESULTS: Public Safety Decisions Should be Driven by Results, Not Partisan Ideology.

    • I strongly support and promote sound public policy that is driven by data and results - not radical partisan ideology.

    • We need more investments in innovative data systems and transparency requirements that better track taxpayer investments and measure results.

    • We must have better transparency and the release of timely, consistent data from MPD and other agencies.

REFORMS: We Need Commonsense Reforms to Better Utilize Existing Resources.

    • The City should consider the various recommendations in the September 2024 DC Auditor’s report, such as recalibrating assignments, boosting the number of detectives investigating homicides and other crimes, and exploring how other police agencies use civilians or other City departments to help with traffic enforcement, crowd control, routine non-emergency calls and people in the throes of mental crises

    • City leaders must also urgently address the Office of Unified Communications (OUC)’s 911 call center, including the creation of an independent task force and the immediate implementation of reforms to increase accountability and transparency within the agency

    • We also need more community policing with regular community meetings, more foot patrols, and better joint efforts between MPD and our community on local safety initiatives

REINVESTMENTS: We Must Reinvest in Law Enforcement and Crime Prevention Services.

    • We must adequately fund public safety to recruit, retain, and retrain the officers and personnel we need to keep us safe.

    • I’ll continue to call for greater access to mental health and substance abuse treatment and services.

    • I am proud to be a strong advocate for youth summer and after-school investments, including at the Park View Recreation Center.

  • REGULAR UPDATES THAT KEEP YOU INFORMED

    • Regular Updates: Stay tuned for the launch of multiple platforms, including social media and regular news updates to keep you informed about government actions, meetings, and opportunities for involvement.

    • Monthly Community Meetings: I will host monthly community meetings here in Park View to listen to you and keep you informed.

    • Responsive Communications: I will continue to respond to you in a timely manner and help as appropriately as I can.

  • PROMOTE BETTER CODE ENFORCEMENT & BALANCED ZONING DECISIONS

    • Stricter Code Enforcement: I proud to collaborate with City agencies to amplify the issues you bring to my attention. I’ll continue to advocate for more timely inspections and enforcement of building codes and regulations, addressing issues such as unsafe structures, illegal dumping, and overgrown lots.

    • Blight Reduction: The City must improve how it identifies and targets blighted properties for rehabilitation or demolition.

    • Smarter Zoning: I’ll keep pushing for smarter zoning decisions that balance our affordable housing needs with protect residents’ access to green spaces and shows respect for long-time and existing residents and homeowners. If we grow without addressing noise, parking, property value impacts, and safety, we risk ruining all the things that make Park View great.

  • HELP OUR SMALL BUSINESS GROW

    • Business Support and Development: I will explore how the City can help local small businesses during and after construction whose operations may be affected.

    • Balanced Infrastructure: I am a strong supporter of a balanced approach that ensures a safe, accessible environment for pedestrians, cyclists, bus riders, and drivers, while also encouraging increased foot traffic for Georgia Avenue’s small businesses.

    • Community Involvement: The City must engage residents in the planning and decision-making process through regular meetings and feedback sessions, ensuring this project and all others meet the needs and desires of our community.

  • ENSURING INCLUSIVITY & ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL RESIDENTS

    • Language and Accessibility Services: I am pushing for translation and interpretation services at meetings and in official communications and ensure meetings and materials are accessible to people with disabilities.

    • Transparent Decision-Making: I’m working to ensure transparency in all ANC decisions by providing clear explanations of policy decisions and their impacts.

    • Designate Community Liaisons: I will soon designate community liaisons who can help engage underrepresented groups.
